A bronze incense burner (koro)
Meiji period (late 19th century), signed Nishimura Masayoshi zo kore
With dark brown patination overall, the lid surmounted by a handle in the shape of a rock face with a gnarled tree and a figure facing off against a giant lizard, bordered in bands of fretwork, lappets and flowers, with large handles on either side formed as pine branches, the body with scenes of Shoki exorcising a demon and a hawk perched on a pine branch over a rushing river, eyes locked with a hissing snake on an opposing branch, the stepped base decorated with lappets, further foliate scroll and a dragon in the clouds and supported on seven stylized feet formed as animal masks and tongues, all on an integrated flat base with fretwork encircling the outer edge
