Maeda Seison was a champion of Nihonga, the movement that modernized traditional Japanese painting. He was an influential member of the circle of students of Okakura Tenshin (1962-1913) at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he started the group Kojikai.

Maeda began exhibiting his work in artists' society shows in 1906, moving on to more prestigious sponsored exhibitions, such as the "Bunten." He was honored with the Asahi Culture Prize in 1929. In 1937 he was accepted into the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and granted the Order of Cultural Merit in 1955.
