A bronze altar of Surya
Northeastern India, Pala period, circa 10th century
Standing on a lotus base over a plinth with lotiform legs, his hands at his chest holding lotus stems blossoming at his shoulders, clad in boots and a patterned dhoti and adorned with the sacred thread, sashes and necklaces, the face with full lips and almond-shaped eyes surmounted by a foliate tiara, flanked by the bearded scribe Pingala and the spear-wielding Dandi, backed by an openwork aureole and circular nimbus, with the seven horses below
