Lot Essay

The forlorn female pining for her lover passes the time looking at his portrait while her fair-skinned friend attempts to distract her from her woes. The bedchamber with its vibrant red background calls attention to her lack of companionship, invoking in the viewer the emptiness the heroine feels.
