Lot Essay

The coat of arms are those of Magnay impaling Flower, for Christopher James Magnay (1794-1829) and his wife Caroline, daughter of Sir Charles Flower 1sr Bt. (d.1834), whom he married in 1824. Christopher was a wholesale stationer and worked in partnership with his father and brother. His father Christopher Magnay (d.1826) was Lord Mayor of London in 1821. This office is reflected in the Magnay arms which incorporate the chain of office of the Lord Mayor.
