Lot Essay

The calligraphy is taken from chapter 64 of the novel, Zhouchao mishi (The Secret Stories of the Zhou dynasty), written by Yu Shaoyu during the Jiajing period. The excerpt is the answer to a question posed by Duke Ai of the state of Qin when seeking to choose a judge for a competition amongst nobles, and may be translated, 'the Heaven and Earth depend on one another, both stem from the Five Elements, the rivers descend from Heaven, and Mount Tai finds its origin in Mount Kunlun.'
