Second half 19th century
The lobed sexfoil-shaped rim overall decorated with flowers, foliage and birds on white background to the inside and foliage and flowers on dark-brown background to the outside, the bottom with portrait of Epiktetos and a landscape to the reverse

Lot Essay

Epiktetos was an Attic vase painter in the early red-figure style. Besides Oltos, he is the most important painter of the Pioneer Group and was active between 520 and 490 BC. His name translates as "newly acquired" which is most probably a reference to his slave status.
