Lot Essay

The paper inventory label for the Castello Reale di Racconigi indicates that the lot was private property of the Italian Royal Family. With origins in the 12th Century, Castello Reale di Racconigi became a Savoy-Carignano property in 1605 and was transformed into a princely residence. Later the private property of the Royal House of Savoy, Racconigi was gifted with its contents by King Vittorio Emanuele III, to his son Umberto (1904-1983), Prince of Piedmont (later King Umberto II), following his marriage to Princess Marie-José of Belgium in 1930.

For an explanation of the 'P.P.R' inventory number, see lot 1.
