PRINTED AT PASSY: PRIVATEERS AGAINST BRITAIN. A rare and important example of Franklin's official printing at his private press at Passy. In his capacity as Minister Plenipotentiary, Franklin had authority to commission French and Irish privateers to seize ships belonging to Great Britain. The bond "was intended to insure that the privateers authorized by Franklin obeyed the laws of the sea and behaved in a civilized manner. If they defaulted, Franklin had their bond for twenty thousand dollars. Any piece of printing done at Passy is important, for Franklin printed few pieces in small quantities. This item also displays one of the most important of the wide range of subjects relative to the interests of the United States that occupied Franklin's attention in France" (Winegrad, The Intellectual World of Benjamin Franklin, p.99). Livingston 30.
