2o ( 304 x 186 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title and last leaf, LARGE WOODCUT FOLDING MAP, woodcut illustrations in text. (Some light mostly marginal staining.) 19th-century diced calf with central gilt stamp of the Society of Writers to the Signet (expertly rebacked with old spine laid down); cloth folding case. Provenance: George Lockhart of Carnwath (1673-1731), Scottish writer and politician (bookplate on title); The Society of Writers to the Signet (device on binding).

Third Basel edition of The Novus orbis regionum ac insularum veteribus incognitarum, a collection of accounts of the New World, first published in Basel by Hervagius in 1532 (see previous lot), and subsequently enlarged and reissued; the present edition (in which the four accounts on pp. 538-677, including those of Cortez were added) is the most complete. The present copy contains the world map which is often lacking. The map is called for in all Basel editions of the work (the Paris edition used a map by Oronce Finé). It is the issue with "Asia" printed at a similar level to "Mare Caspia," and "Tropicus Capricorni" appearing below the tropic-line (see previous lot). Adams G-1338; Alden & Landis 555/42; BMC/STC German 375; Borba de Moraes I, p. 317; Brown World Encompassed 65; Brunet IV:132; JCB I:202; Sabin 34,104; Shirley 67 (world map).
