FIRST EDITION. A scarce work on the Osage Indians, and other Indians living on the Missouri, written by Paul Vissier when six Osages--a "prince," his wife, cousin, and three "warriors"--visited France under the auspices of an American army officer, David Delauney. The author interviewed the Indians from southern Illinois through an interpreter to determine, in part, if they were descendents of the twelve lost tribes of Israel. In the first chapters, after this speculation on the origin of the North American Indians, Vissier provides a general view of their customs, agriculture, food, social structure, law system, arts, religion, commerce, wars, etc. The last two chapters describe the voyage of the six Osages to France, including their visit to the French king, and give some additional information on their personal backgrounds. Howes V-133; Jones 890; Sabin 100607; Wagner-Camp-Becker 33a. Not in Field, Graff or Streeter.
