An exhibition standard 1/16in:1ft scale model of Sir Goldsworthy Gurney's Steam Carriage of circa 1827 built by A.M. Tyrer from the patent drawings with silver soldered furnace with 17 x 3/16in. dia. copper water tanks and fittings including level test cocks, safety and other valves. Engine details include twin cylinders 1/2in. bore x 1½in. stroke, reversing valve gear, gibbed and cottered big ends and centrally mounted overhead valve chests with separate steam ways, donkey pump with cylinder 3/10in. bore x 7/10in. stroke with scotch crank and appropriate pipes and valves, and much other detailing. Chassis and body details include spoked wheels with metal tyres and hubcaps, pilot wheels with tiller steering and self centring devise, working leaf springs, driver's seat with regulator and reversing lever, boxwood outside seats, upholstered interior with opening doors and windows, working lamps, hand feed pump and steps. Finished in maroon, black and red with black lining, yellow lettering and hand painted crests -- 9½ x 19in. (23.5 x 48.3cm.). Glazed case and display base Sir Goldsworthy Gurney 1793-1875 pioneered technically successful steam carriages a half century before the advent of the gasoline powered car. Several carriages were built but, due to horse interests, were taxed to extinction. Gurney was knighted in 1863 for improving lighting and ventilation in the House of Commons, though early in his life he practised as a surgeon. The model took approx: 2,200 hours to build and runs well on compressed air.
