The 4in. scale Burrell Single Crank Compound Showman's Road Locomotive 'Merlin', Reg.n No. PB 1994, well engineered by P. Beale with welded steel boiler built 1991 to BS 2790 by Valentine Welding and Engineering Co and stamped VWE 102 with fittings including water gauge with glass protector, pressure gauge, safety, blower, injector, whistle, waterlift, blowdown and clack valves with shut-off cocks. Engine details include cylinders approx 1¼in. and 2½in. bores x 4in. stroke, footplate controlled draincocks and pipework, mechanical lubricator, slipper type crosshead guides, Stephenson's link reverse, pickering governor, two roadspeeds, eccentric driven feed pump and by-pass and disc flywheel. Chassis details include spoked wheels with moulded rubber tyres and brass hub caps, worm and roller chain steering, damper, cable drum, cable and fairleads, belly and tender tanks, band brake to third shaft, water lift, pipe and rose, smoke box mounted 12v alternator, gauges and switches, full length planked and canvas covered canopy with lighting, mounted on barley sugar supports (the rear section readily removable) and rear mounted driving seat (readily removable) with padded seat. Finished in maroon, yellow and grey with red and yellow lining, the sideboards lettered P. Beale & Son Engineers -- 45½ x 82in. (115.5 x 208cm.)
