AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED BELL-KRATER
ATTRIBUTED TO THE HOPPIN PAINTER, CIRCA 380-370 B.C.
The obverse with a maenad seated to the left, drapery around her waist falling in luxurious folds to her ankles, her chest bare, wearing a body chain, necklace and earrings, long ringlets falling onto her shoulders, holding a tympanum in her upraised left hand, a naked bearded satyr dancing before her with his palms held out;
The reverse with two himation-clad youths, each wearing a headband, one holding a staff; scrolling palmettes under handles, a band of meander and saltire squares below the scenes, band of laurel below rim, details in added white
