The unusual drawing of each of the dragons makes it possible that the original inspiration for this highly unusual soumac was a stray Chinese carpet or similar design that had found its way to the Caucasus. Many a Chinese dragon is depicted with the face central, looking forward, and the tail curling around beneath. The use of a yellow ground reinforces the possibility of this unusual influence.
