Lot Essay

A symbol of stability, the djed-pillar was first thought to represent a stylised tree trunk with branches lopped off and later as a stylised representation of the backbone of Osiris. Indeed from the Late Period onwards, djed-pillars were often surmounted by the god's atef-crown, as here.
