PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius (c.100-c.170). Geographicae enarrationis, ed. Servetus. Vienna and Lyon: Gaspar Trechsel for Hugues de La Porte, 1541. 2° (450 x 275mm), 49 woodcut double-page and one single-page map, text diagrams including full-page woodcut of an armillary sphere with the twelve winds by Albrecht Dürer (l4v). (Maps 3-6, 10, 24 and 48 browned, lighter browning elsewhere, worming to map of British Isles causing some loss to title, other slight losses, the Holy Land, the final world map and several others with worming at upper margin, map 31 stained, small waterstain to map 45, mostly marginal repairs, all maps on stiff modern guards causing crumpling, some marginal worming to text leaves.) Later vellum (recased with new endpapers).
The second edition of Ptolemy to be edited by Michael Villanovus (1511-1553), known as Servetus. The work falls into three parts; the text, comprising the Latin translation by Wilibald Pirckheimer (1470-1530); the maps, 27 depicting the ancient and 22 the modern world, with one map of Lotharingia; and the index. The maps are printed from unaltered blocks first used in Lorenz Fries's edition (Strassburg, 1522). Some are printed without descriptive text on the verso, due to the influence of Calvinism.
