CUBERO SEBASTIAN, Pedro (c.1645-c.1697). Breve relacion de la peregrinacion que ha hecho de la mayor parte del mundo. Madrid: Juan Garcia Infaçon, 1680. 8° (208 x 138mm). Title within typographic border, woodcut arms of Spain at the head of the dedication, woodcut initials and ornaments. (Browning, sometimes heavy, a few leaves lightly dogearred.) Near contemporary vellum, lettered in ink to spine, yapp edges, red sprinkled edges (lightly rubbed and soiled, very small hole to lower cover, ties lacking). Provenance: early ink inscription to title and marginalia to first few gatherings.

FIRST EDITION OF CUBERO'S AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL ACCOUNT OF HIS CIRCUMNAVIGATION. Ordained as a priest in Zaragoza, in 1671 the Propoganda fide appointed him as a missionary to Asia and the East Indies. He travelled extensively overland, visiting Moscow, Astrakhan, Armenia, Persia before reaching Goa. From there, he travelled to Madras and then on to Malacca, where he was detained by the Dutch. Eventually freed, he sailed for Manilla, then Mexico, arriving back in Europe in 1679. VERY RARE - the last record of the present work selling at auction is Sotheby's 9-11 March 1959, lot 341.
