Full-page engraved map of Scandinavia and neighbouring countries, 467 woodcut vignettes including repeats, printer's device on title-page and final verso. (Title with ink deletions and small tears, occasional marginal tears, small stains and light dampstains, one affecting woodcut on EE5v, a few old repairs, one in B7v affecting woodcut.) 18th-century vellum, green edges (stained and a little worn). Provenance: Liber est Papiri Papirini (inscription on Q6r) -- inscriptions deleted from title-page.
FIRST EDITION IN ITALIAN. The fine woodcuts include depictions of hunting and fishing scenes, various sporting games, sea monsters and other curiosities. Magnus's great ethnographical and geographical survey of Scandinavia was first published in Latin in 1555. This Italian translation re-uses the woodcuts, with a few variations, illustrating all aspects of life: local customs, warfare, trades and occupations, animals, hunting, and daily activities. The full-page map of Scandinavia, which was a woodcut in the Latin edition, is engraved here. Camerini, Giunti, 689; Schwerdt II, 4; cf. Mortimer, Harvard Italian 270.
