Lot Essay

Joseph Gott (d. 1860) trained in London under John Flaxman between 1798 and 1802 and from 1805 at the Royal Academy. In 1822 he moved permanently to Rome, where he and his compatriot John Gibson, achieved great notoriety. While in Rome he continued to exhibit internationally both at the Royal Academy (1820-1848) and at the 1855 Exposition Universelle, where he submitted a figure of 'Ruth Gleaning'.
