Lot Essay

This console is inspired by a design by sculptor Joseph Deschamps (d. 1788) for a table delivered to the 'Morning Room' at the Château de Bellevue in 1785. The table was subsequently relocated in 1838 to the Salon des Malachites at the Grand Trianon. Interestingly, a reproduction of the model by Alfred Beurdeley, also with veined white marble top, was sold in a sale of the ébéniste's stock on 4 & 5 May 1895, lot 266. Beurdeley's watercolor design for a variant model, shown with a lyre-form surmount on the stretcher, is illustrated C. Mestagh, L'Ameublement d'art françois, 185-1900, Paris, 2010, p. 49.
