Lot Essay

This illuminated folio is from the same series as a pair of illuminated folios which sold in these Rooms, 5 October 2010, lot 227. This group are part of is termed the metropolitan Qazvin style which according to B.W. Robinson was practiced in Tabriz from circa 1565-85. Further examples from this same series are in the Chester Beatty Library, which also have similar waq-waq motifs, and frame folios from Jami's subhat al-abrar, (illustrated in M. Minovi, B.W. Robinson et.al, The Chester Beatty Library, A Catalogue of the Persian Manuscripts and Miniatures, Dublin, 1960, cat.210). Significantly, our folio appears to be the only example from this group which is signed.
