Lot Essay
Virginia Beahan began a photo-essay on Cuba in 2001, searching its topography for remnants of the island's diverse past. Beahan's Cuba is a land of contradictions--disappointment and hope, decay and rejuvenating beauty and an adherence to the past while looking to the future.
She has received numerous awards including a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a Mellon Foundation Grant, and a New England Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. Her photographs have been exhibited internationally and can be found in the permanent collections of a number of important institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The J. Paul Getty Museum of Art, Los Angeles and The Corcoran Museum of Art, Washington D.C. Her collaborative work with photographer Laura McPhee is also represented in this sale, lot 51.
