Lot Essay

The Yildiz Imperial Factory was founded in 1890 by Sultan 'AbdulHamid II (r. 1876-1909). It started production in 1892 but two years later the factory was damaged by an earthquake. These vases are interesting as they were produced in 1894-95, very early in the life of the Imperial Yildiz Factory when production recommenced after the 1894 earthquake, but decorated by the French artist Narcice in 1908, the same year the production was interrupted before Sultan 'AbdulHamid II's deposition.
