A YELLOW JADE 'MOUNTAIN' CARVING
18TH CENTURY
The stone is deeply carved and pierced with Shoulao and an attendant beneath a pine tree and a pavilion. The reverse is similarly decorated and flanked by deer. The stone is of a rich yellowish-caramel tone, and there is a five-line inscription to one side which has possibly been added later.

Lot Essay

The inscription contains an imperial poem composed by Qianlong, which is recorded in Qing Gao Zong (Qianlong) yu zhi shi wen quan ji, vol. 5, published in Zhongguo Renmin Daxue chu ban she, Beijing, 1993, p. 458. The poem may be translated as:
The stone beams penetrate into the mist and clouds,
obtaining the golden lingzhi, brightening up the Jiu Huang mountain.
How can the elixir of immortality
be compared with the buddha's hand and the smiling flowers?
