A RARE LARGE GILT LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN
SONG/YUAN DYNASTY, 13TH CENTURY
The deity is finely cast seated in dhyanasana on a lotus pedestal with overlapping petals. One hand is held in vitarkamudra and the other is holding a small amphora. The deity is dressed in loose-fitting robes and wearing an elaborate beaded necklace. The serene face is framed by pendulous earlobes and a tiara housing a small seated Buddha.
27 7/8 in. (70.5 cm.) high.

Lot Essay

There is a bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara in the University Museum, Philadelphia, (illustrated in Hugo Munsterberg, Chinese Buddhist Bronzes, New York, 1988, p. 68, no. 55.) dated to the Song dynasty which has a similarly styled serene expression and smiling face.
