SHENDETANG ZHI HALL MARK IN IRON-RED, DAOGUANG PERIOD (1821-1850)
The ovoid body of the vase has been finely painted in colourful enamels to depict a dragon boat race. The two boats, one modelled as a dragon and the other as a phoenix, are filled with boys rowing. They race on a sea of green waves and are surrounded by shores and distant mountains where people cheer them on. The tall waisted neck has a pair of kui dragon flattened handles, and is decorated to each side with a central lotus bloom borne on a leafy meander with smaller flowers.

There is a famille rose dish dated to the Daoguang period decorated with a very similar dragon boat race scene in the Palace Museum, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Porcelains with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, The Commercial Press, Hong Kong, 1999, p.240, no.212.
