Lot Essay

A very similar pair of bowls with the same design was sold in these rooms, 9 November 2010, lot 332.

The 'hundred boys' motif expresses the wish for progeny and numerous offspring, while the boys playing with lanterns and lighting firecrackers may suggest that the scene depicted is the Lantern Festival held on the 15th day of the lunar new year.
