Dedicated to or from the library of Lala Kara Mustafa Pasha (d. 1581 AD), Arabic manuscript on paper, 254ff. plus one fly-leaf, each folio with 15ll. of black naskh script, with gold roundel verse markers outlined in black, sura headings in blue thuluth script within cartouches, text within blue and black-ruled gold frame, marginal section markers in gold thuluth, catchwords, opening bifolio with gold and polychrome illumination and text in clouds on gold ground, folio 2 replaced, opening folio with replaced lower part, colophon partly concealed by a later added band of paper giving the name Mustafa Pasha bin 'Abd al-Manar Lala Fakhr Al 'Uthman al-Sultan Salim bin al-Sultan Sulayman and dated, in 16th century gilt and stamped black morocco binding with flap

Lot Essay

Lala Kara Mustafa Pasha (d. 1580 AD) was Governor of Damascus and then Grand Vizier of the Ottoman empire. His honorific title affixed to his name "Lala" means that he had been appointed tutor to Shahzadeh Selim (the future Selim II) by Sultan Sulayman.
