Lot Essay

The attribution to Jan Breughel II has been confirmed by Dr. Klaus Ertz (see literature). A variant of the present painting was offered with Sotheby's, London, 7 July 2005, lot 104. Given its close relationship to other allegories, such as the painting offered in 2005 and the Allegory of Power and Justice, signed and dated 1647, in a private collection (see K. Ertz, op cit, no. 220, ill.), Ertz dates the present work to circa 1647, shortly before the end of the Eighty Years' War in 1648.
