Lot Essay

Miniature Dan masks were considered protective amulets when people were far from their village. They are supposed to be reproductions of the family mask and served as a receptacle for its spirit. The beautiful encrusted patina is testament to years of offerings layering the surface.
Cf. Fischer, E., Himmelheber, H., 1976, fig.112 for a related passport mask.
