Lot Essay

The gesture of raising arms to the sky is a classical Tellem and Dogon symbol. These two beautiful iron ceremonial staffs emmanate a universality which recalls 9th century Piravend art from Iran representing surrealistic human figures raising their arms, and at the same time, the sculptures of the renowned artist, Alberto Giacometti.

See Leloup, H., Dogon, Musée du Quai Branly, Paris, 2012, fig.183 for a related staff.
