EARLY MOCHICA FROG VESSEL

The seated amphibian expressively portrayed with head thrown back, raised ridges encircling the face and throat, large mouth with lips parted, bulbous eyes and flaring nostrils; the whole painted in creamy white with decorative details in reddish brown.
Height: 7 in. (17.7 cm.)

Lot Essay

Frogs and toads are associated with water and vegetation and along with this fertility. All anurans are at least somewhat toxic. Some frogs, notably Dendobrates, the poison dart frog produce a toxin used by some peoples in hunting and fishing.
