Formed as a Nikosthenic amphora, the circular foot chased with guilloché, the lower and upper body gadrooned, the neck applied with wreathes, the rim with acanthus, the handles formed as stiff leaves and berries, the cover with conforming decoration and a pod finial, the body with a later-applied racing scene and engraved on the reverse with an inscription, marked on foot and under cover

James Merry (1805 -77) was a Scottish ironmaster, a race-horse breeder, and a liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1859 to 1874. He was awarded this trophy in 1844 when his four-year old horse, Armytage placed first at the Stirling Races.
