This stool has various Royal inventory marks from St. James's Palace and Kensington Palace in London as well as Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh. It was certainly at Kensington until 1911 and was presumably sent to Holyrood for the first visit of King George V and Queen Mary, as the brands confirm a date between 1912 and 1927. A circa 1912 photograph of the Throne Room at Holyrood shows gilt armchairs and stools lining the walls, while this stool may be one of the pair flanking the throne. Two pairs of the Throne Room armchairs which had the identical brands were sold anonymously at Christie's, New York, 21-22 October 2010, lot 271 (the catalogue reproduces the photograph), and 14-15 April 2011, lots 445. It is unclear when the stools and the armchairs left the Royal Collection, as a 1927 inventory of Holyrood does not include them in the Throne Room.
