Lot Essay

Clapcott (pp. 19-20) notes that 'The term 'honour' appears for the first time in the rules of 1888, although the equally well-known word 'dormie' is not to be found until several years later ... Ten minutes was allowed to search for the ball before it was deemed to be lost, although from 1783 the time had always been five minutes.' The five-minute rule was restored in 1899.
