Traditionally the sitter of the present painting has been identified as Tom Morris because of the inscription on the reverse. Unfortunately Tom Morris Senior (1821-1908) was a grey-haired gentleman in 1886, and his son Tom Morris Junior (1851-1875) died before the painting was executed. Further research suggests that it could in fact depict Edward Blyth, a prominent amateur golfer from North Berwick, who is believed to have been involved with the expansion of the St Andrews Clubhouse in 1879.
