A UNIQUE BOTTLE OF 1774 YELLOW WINE
Yes, a 1774 Vin Jaune !
What a privilege to hold this impeccable 238 years old bottle in my hands. While Anatoile Vercel (1725 - 1786) was pruning the vines this year, he didn't know that King Louis XV was about to die and that he was going to harvest and vinified under King Louis XVI. To give some historical context, United States was still an English colony; Napoleon Bonaparte was just a kid and the French revolution was not far This wine is more than 238 years of history alive in a bottle
This bottle was part of a batch which had been kept intact for eight generations by the Vercel family, in a vaulted underground cellar in Arbois, the capital of Jura wines and birthplace of the creator of modern oenology, Louis Pasteur (1822-1895). Legend has it that Pasteur "savoured a bottle in 1882 from the same batch to celebrate his admittance to the Academie Franaise". The Vercel's were known since the XIV century as one of the oldest winemaker families in Arbois.
This " Burgundy-style " bottle - with a long neck and rounded belly - contains 87 centilitres of vin jaune. One of the bottles from the same batch was tasted in 1994 by 24 professionals, at Chteau Pcauld in Arbois, and declared as "excellent". The "golden-amber" coloured nectar, with "flavours of nuts, spices, curry, cinnamon, vanilla and dried fruits, gave "superb results and a day to remember," and was awarded 9 points.
The Vin Jaune, traditional wine of the Jura region lies between Burgundy and Switzerland and takes its name from the Jura Mountains. It's an area of lakes and mountainous pastures - and some very unusual wines! It is a very ancient wine making region and Louis Pasteur was ordered by Napoleon III to investigate the maturation of wine. Pasteur used wines from his family vineyard and in doing so he discovered the role of yeast during fermentation. Of course from this experiment the science of oenology was born, but not to mention the pasteurization process that we use today for milk!
Vin jaune wine is also known as yellow wine because of its deep rich golden colour. It is a special, characteristic type of dry white wine made from the local grape called Savagnin. It is similar to dry finoSherry and gets its character from the maturation in a barrel under a film of yeast, known as flor in Jerez, Spain and as voile in this region. Unlike Sherry it is not fortified though and has natural alcohol level of only 13-15
Made to last centuries when of good quality and nicknamed " the wine of kings and the king of wines ", this 1774 bottle of Vin Jaune is probably the oldest unfortified example of what is to be still an astounding wine.and another true rarity for wine lover and connoisseur.
