Lot Essay

A cycle of frescoes in the cathedral in Udine by Vitale da Bologna and his studio depict several of the many miracles ascribed to Saint Nicholas, including one that shows the saint saving a rider from falling into a precipice. It is possible, then, that the present composition also represents this lesser-known miracle of Nicholas.
