John Craxton met the photographer Joan Rayner (n/aee Eyres Monsell) in London during the war and in 1946, when partnered with the writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, she was instrumental in getting him to Greece. Craxton and the Leigh Fermors were friends for the rest of their lives, with the artist producing cover designs for six Leigh Fermor first editions over a period of 50 years.
