Lot Essay

The present work is a portrait of the modernist novelist and poet, James Joyce. As with Louis le Brocquy's portraits of Samuel Beckett (see lot 239), le Brocquy first started creating studies for portraits of Joyce in 1965, and by 1979 he had created a series of no less than 120 head portraits of the poet in charcoal, watercolour and oil.
