Signed Hokuetsu Takaoka Seihodo Hori Hisayoshi and kakihan, Meiji Period (late 19th century)
Of impressive form with applied dragon handles, elaborate base with mask feet and shoulder pierced with clouds, inlaid in gold, silver, shakudo, shibuichi, copper and gilt and cast in high and low relief with a scene from the tale of the Soga Brothers, the neckrim with maple leaves and pierced panels of bullrushes, plantain and other flowers and foliage

Now Toyama Prefecture, the Hokuetsu province was ruled by the Maeda clan during the Edo Period when the town of Takaoka was a centre for both bronze and iron work.
