The moon flask of various decorative styles, the reverse with a circular panel in Komai style inlaid in silver and gold nunomezogan, the front roundel inlaid in gold, silver, shakudo and shibuichi and carved and chiselled in low relief depicting a ho-o bird, bordered by dragons, the sides deeply carved with dragons in clouds inlaid in silver and copper, gold rim

Lot Essay

Here the dragon and phoenix are inspired by the ancient Chinese-influenced designs as found on objects in the Shosoin, the 8th century Imperial Repository in Nara, whose contents were made available to selected craftsmen for the first time during the Meiji era.
