Lot Essay

This composition was intended for a Gobelins tapestry celebrating Louis XIV's victory over the Spanish by the Bruges Canal on 31 August 1667. The king is shown surrounded by his generals: Créqui and Condé on the right and Bellefonds, with his back to the viewer, on the left. Other versions of the composition, all considered autograph, are in the Louvre (no. 1483, 50 cm. x 80 cm.), the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Marseille (17 cm. x 21 cm.) and the Musée de Narbonne.
