[WAR OF 1812]. An address of members of the House of Representatives of the Congress of the United States, to their constituents, on the subject of the war with Great Britain. Hartford, Connecticut: Hudson and Goodwin, 1812.
24pp., 8o (8 3/8 x 5¼ in). AN ELABORATE AMERICAN BINDING: burgundy straight-grained morocco richly blind- and gilt-tooled, covers gilt-paneled with broad borders and central volutes, gilt spine, top edge gilt, others uncut. Joints with rubbing. Provenance: Herschel V. Jones (bookplate).
OPPOSITION TO THE WAR OF 1812. A cogently presented argument, endorsed by many representatives, asserting that war with Britain was not "necessary or required by any moral duty, or any political expediency." The manifesto was printed widely (see Sabin). In June, under increasing pressure from "war hawks" in Congress, Madison's war declaration was narrowly approved by 19 to 13 in the Senate and 79 to 49 in the House. Sabin 393; Shoemaker 24547.
