THIRD AND BEST EDITION. Chippendale's work was first published in 1754 (with 161 plates; see lot 361). It was an immediate success and a second edition followed in 1755. The present edition was the last to be published during Chippendale's lifetime. He revised and updated a number of the plates and added enough wholly new material to increase the total number of plates to 200 (8 explanatory plates and 192 plates of designs; plates 147 and 148 are misnumbered CXLVI and CXLVII respectively).
