LÉOVILLE-LAS-CASES

Château Léoville-Las-Cases is the most northerly of the Saint Julien properties and closest to the vineyards of Pauillac. The richness and power of their wines means that Léoville-Las-Cases are often mistaken for a top Pauillac. The estate has 97 hectares of vines divided into 125 parcels, the largest and most important is the 50 hectare walled vineyard called Grand Clos. The vineyards are planted with 65 Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 Merlot, 12 Cabernet Franc and 3 Petit Verdot. The grapes are entirely hand-harvested and fermentation which takes place in a mix of wooden, cement and stainless steel vats lasts for between 12 and 24 days at temperatures between 24C and 28C. The wine is then aged for between 18-20 months in 60 to 100 new oak depending on the vintage.
