JABOULET
As the hill of Hermitage crowns the splendid vineyards of the Northern Rhône, the poetry of a little lone chapel cresting this crown gives Jaboulets best Hermitage its moniker. Rendering carefully tended Rhone wines, this was a family business from its inception in 1834 until its recent sale. Often mentioned in the same breath as the equally great Chave but differing in style, La Chapelle has that certain elegance, leather and ethereal smoke bordering on incense. Not as heavy or as extracted, spending lesser time in oak, the wines are nonetheless intense. The 1961, 1978 and 1990 are all three of the greatest wines of the last century. The choice is simply a matter of preference as to how mature one likes to savor great reds.
