2000 BORDEAUX
A vintage that needs no introduction. The 2000 vintage proudly stands alongside of the 1945 and 1982 as one of the finest Bordeaux vintages of all time. With ideal ripeness achieved thanks to the uninterrupted sunshine in August and September, 2000 was the year of the blockbuster Bordeaux: inky, rich and tannic. Nearly every estate had the chance to produce fantastic wines to cellar, with the top Chateaux leading the way, creating the finest claret with another 30 or 50 years left in their extraordinary lifespan. This legendary vintage began on an auspicious foot, with one of the worst outbreaks of mildew in the past twenty years. A chilly January and February suddenly reversed course with higher than normal temperatures in March, causing the buds to burst ahead of schedule. Dampness, along with the dreaded mildew, followed in April and May, causing quiet resignation among once hopeful vingerons. June and July also proved difficult and wet, until the very end of the month when a large high pressure weather pattern stalled over France, creating the hot and dry conditions Cabernet and Merlot crave through the months of August and September. The grapes grew large and developed thick skins to withstand the arid weather. Merlot was picked beginning September 14, with the more reticent Cabernet going into vat near the beginning of October.

"Still youthful and a bit closed, the Lafite will take years to develop. At this early stage, the wine is riper and softer than many others from this commune, but is not yet showing its full potential. Still plenty of oak on the nose, but the red and black berry fruit character with licorice notes stands out. Very good length - unforgettable wine." CC, November 2004
