Romanée-Saint-Vivant--Vintage 1990
Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Levels: six 1.0cm or better, one 1.5cm
"Noted at the first St-Vivant vertical at the Domaine, Novermber 1995: fairly deep, soft yet firm and rich looking; a wonderfully harmonious nose, complete, touch of vanillin and 'sweaty' tannins, considerable depth, becoming floral and, as I have noted before with DRC, after an hour, a whiff of strawberry. Fairly full-bodied, crisp yet soft, rounded, with richness masking the tannins. Great length. 'Great potential'. Four years later, a jeroboam at Karl-Heinz Wolf's villa overlooking the Attersee: a powerhouse, fairly sweet, yet very tannic, very fragrant, 'needs ages'. It gave the braised beef a tough time. Most recently, at the second of the St-Vivant verticals: still deep, fairly intense; perfect Pinot, harmonious; sweet, mouthfilling, rich, complete, masked tannin - the easiest to drink of the younger vintages. Aubert de Villaine told our very small group - which included Le Meilleur Sommelier de France - that the yield was 33.86hl/ha and 24,026 bottles, the biggest by far between 1989 and 2000. ***(**)" MB, Vintage Wine, October 2001
